Delivering exceptional care and support

Our dedicated support team endeavours to provide a holistic approach to care and will be available to provide advice and assistance during and after the delivery of treatment at Rutherford Cancer Centre North East. All patients can choose to complete a Macmillan Holistic Needs Assessment and working together, we will prepare a personalised care plan to provide support and care tailored uniquely to you.

Proton beam therapy at the Rutherford

Proton beam therapy is an advanced form of external radiotherapy that uses high-energy proton beams instead of photon x-ray beams or electrons. The proton beam's ability to be targeted during treatment allows for harder to reach tumours to be treated, as well as tumours that are in sensitive locations such as near the spine, in the brain or affecting vital organs. Although this treatment method utilises high-energy protons to damage and kill cancer cells, the proton beam can be specifically targeted to a treatment area and made to 'stop' before affecting surrounding healthy tissue. At the Rutherford Cancer Centres, proton beam therapy is delivered using the latest technology.

Our purpose-built treatment facilities were designed around effective delivery of our services and we pride ourselves on recognising that every patient has individual needs and unique treatment experiences.

Facilities available at the Rutherford Cancer Centre North East include:

  • 1 medical proton therapy machine
  • 1 medical linear accelerator
  • A Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) suite
  • 1 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner for treatment planning
  • 1 Computerised Tomography (CT) scanner for treatment planning
  • 2 Anaesthetic recovery rooms
  • 3 consulting rooms
  • Child-friendly area
  • Waiting area

At the Rutherford, we offer access to privately operated clinics which are open to all self-paying adults. These clinics are supported by leading consultants and specialists that already work with us, and can cover a range of general healthcare conditions within our consultant's specialist areas.
