Delivering exceptional care and support

Every patient that comes to Rutherford Cancer Centres is offered a personalised care pathway, including access to support teams for advice or assistance. A Macmillan Holistic Needs Assessment is available for patients to complete, which allows our teams to better identify and accommodate any concerns you may have. Together, we will prepare a care plan that addresses your personal support and care needs.

Proton beam therapy at the Rutherford

Proton beam therapy is an advanced form of external radiotherapy that uses high-energy proton beams instead of photon x-ray beams or electrons. The proton beam's ability to be targeted during treatment allows for harder to reach tumours to be treated, as well as tumours that are in sensitive locations such as near the spine, in the brain or affecting vital organs. Although this treatment method utilises high-energy protons to damage and kill cancer cells, the proton beam can be specifically targeted to a treatment area and made to 'stop' before affecting surrounding healthy tissue. At the Rutherford Cancer Centres, proton beam therapy is delivered using the latest technology.

The facilities at the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales are purpose-built to deliver our services and treatments; we pride ourselves on providing a highly personalised care plan and recognise that each individual's experience of treatment is unique.

Available facilities include:

  • 1 medical proton therapy machine
  • 1 medical linear accelerator
  • A Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) suite
  • 1 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner for treatment planning
  • 1 Computerised Tomography (CT) scanner for treatment planning
  • Anaesthetic recovery rooms
  • 4 consulting rooms
  • Child-friendly area
  • Waiting area

At the Rutherford, we offer access to privately operated clinics which are open to all self-paying adults. These clinics are supported by leading consultants and specialists that already work with us, and can cover a range of general healthcare conditions within our consultant's specialist areas.
