Delivering exceptional care and support

Holistic care is central to our mission at Rutherford Cancer Centres and the supportive care team are available to offer advice or assistance to our patients during or after the treatment delivery. All patients have the option to complete a Macmillan Holistic Needs Assessment that allows our team to provide a tailored care plan alongside the dedicated treatment.

Proton beam therapy at the Rutherford

Proton beam therapy is an advanced form of external radiotherapy that uses high-energy proton beams instead of photon x-ray beams or electrons. The proton beam's ability to be targeted during treatment allows for harder to reach tumours to be treated, as well as tumours that are in sensitive locations such as near the spine, in the brain or affecting vital organs. Although this treatment method utilises high-energy protons to damage and kill cancer cells, the proton beam can be specifically targeted to a treatment area and made to 'stop' before affecting surrounding healthy tissue. At the Rutherford Cancer Centres, proton beam therapy is delivered using the latest technology.

Purpose-built treatment facilities for the planning and delivery of our services and treatments await patients at Rutherford Cancer Centre Thames Valley. Additionally, we pride ourselves on understanding that each patient has a unique treatment experience, which is why we work together to create tailored treatment plans that accommodate individual needs.

Facilities available at the Rutherford Cancer Centre Thames Valley include:

  • 1 medical proton therapy machine
  • 1 medical linear accelerator
  • A Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) suite
  • 1 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner for treatment planning
  • 1 Computerised Tomography (CT) scanner for treatment planning
  • Anaesthetic recovery rooms
  • 6 consulting rooms
  • Child-friendly area
  • Waiting area
