Why have a Triple Assessment at a Rutherford Breast Clinic?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, it mainly affects women, but it can also occur in men. It’s important to get a diagnosis early along with timely treatment, to successfully treat breast cancer and improve survival rates.

Our Triple Assessment Service is a rapid and complete breast clinic service, all undertaken in-house at the Rutherford Cancer Centres with all tests and scans carried out in one single visit, so you can spend less time worrying waiting for your results and receive timely support. This clinic is supported by our consultants and clinical teams that specialise in breast care and breast cancer treatments, meaning you'll have access to a seamless oncology pathway should you need it.

What to expect at the breast clinic

On your first visit, you will be welcomed to our centre and have a consultation with our breast specialist. During your consultation, you will be able to ask questions, discuss initial symptoms and have the necessary scans and tests on the same day. Below is what you can expect when you attend one of our breast clinics.

Step 1 - Getting to know you

You will be seen initially by a Consultant Breast Surgeon in the presence of a Clinical Nurse Specialist to discuss your clinical history. This includes questions about your family medical history and any current medicines you are taking.

Step 2 - Examination and scanning

  • Clinical Breast Examination - The breast surgeon will undertake a clinical breast examination of both breasts.
  • Breast ultrasound and/or Mammography  - An image of the inside of your breast may be needed for further investigation, this is called imaging.
  • Needle Biopsy if a lump is found - A biopsy is a procedure that involves removing a tissue sample from the breast for further testing. Sometimes this is needed to help make a diagnosis. The procedure is quick, and a local anaesthetic isn't often needed.

Step 3 - Results and next steps

You will get a rapid diagnosis following your appointment which can take up to 48 hours.

For most people, a breast assessment will show normal breast changes or a benign breast condition. Benign breast conditions are common and there are many different types. In this case, the consultant will explain what it is and whether you need any treatment or follow-up.
