Biography

Dr. Kumar has extensive experience successfully treating all manner of upper limb, lower limb and spinal musculoskeletal injuries and conditions causing pain or impairing performance. He has two decades experience treating NHS, military and private patients, as well as elite sportsmen and women of all abilities and ages.

After graduating from Imperial College London, he undertook training and postgraduate qualifications in Surgery, high performance Sports Medicine, and General Practice. He draws upon his expertise from these fields to undertake in-depth clinical evaluation and formulate holistic, bespoke management plans that help his patients achieve their goals.

He has spent six years as a Senior Lecturer at University College London, and as an educationalist, ensures all his patients acquire a good understanding of their diagnosis and treatment strategies. Dr Kumar is the head doctor at Reading Football Club and also works with the European Tour Golf and the English National Ballet.

He has previously enjoyed working within many elite sports, including British Athletics, England Cricket team, Saracens Rugby, The Football Association, West Ham United Football Club, Marathons, Triathlons, and Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games.

He uses his experience and network from working within elite sports to provide the same high level care to all his patients of all levels of ability, to deliver the best possible outcomes for all his patients.

  • Dr Kumar has led the National Tendinopathy Centre for clinical and research excellence for five years.
    He has previously delivered a unique multidisciplinary sports concussion service.

Awards

  • British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine Travel Fellowship to study Sport & Exercise Medicine for children and adolescents at Centre's of Excellence at Harvard in the USA and the University of Toronto and McMaster University in Canada.
  • British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine Research Bursary - to investigate the added benefits of using novel imaging modalities (Ultrasound Tissue Characterisation [UTC] and shear wave sonoelastography) in the diagnosis and management of tendinopathies.
  • National Institute of Health Research [NIHR] BioResource Grant - to investigate the genetics of Achilles tendinopathy.

Research interests

Tendinopathy; Football injuries; Chronic pain management; Concussion; Youth and adolescent sports injuries.

Publications

Dr Kumar has published over 20 research and review articles and presented at international conferences on topics relating to his areas of special expertise in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM), Tendon disorders, Football medicine, and SEM in Children and Adolescents. Examples include:
