Coronavirus (COVID-19)  - our response and information:

Patients are at the heart of everything we do at the Rutherford Cancer Centres, by supporting them on their cancer journey, from diagnosis through to treatment and recovery. Which is why we are continuing to provide access to the latest oncology treatments, including proton beam therapy, during this challenging time. Please see below further information on how we are doing this:

These include:
  • Appropriate PPE for all staff
  • Enhancing the frequency of deep cleaning
  • Temperature screening by patient coordinators before entering the centre
  • Adding more hand cleaning points in the centre
  • Sticky mats at the entrance to the centre
  • Managing patient appointment/treatment times to minimise risk and contact between patients

Working with the NHS & Independent Healthcare Providers Network

Rutherford Cancer Centres is always committed to establishing genuine partnerships with the NHS by providing necessary treatment and diagnostic capacity, using the most advanced equipment available across our network of centres and services, and supporting NHS objectives in delivering high-quality healthcare and outcomes to local communities.

Additional partnerships during COVID-19: We want to reassure you that we are working with the NHS and the Independent Healthcare Providers Network as part of the national response to coronavirus, ensuring that cancer patients continue to receive their treatments. We continue to remain open for referrals from private patients, ensuring that they have access to the cancer treatments and services that they need. This includes chemotherapyimmunotherapy, radiotherapy, proton beam therapy and supportive care services. Working together with patients, the NHS and others, we are committed to ensuring that cancer patients have a choice in their cancer treatments, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

In 2019, NHS Wales commissioned the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales to provide proton beam therapy to Welsh adult NHS patients. This is for an initial two years duration, after which its scope could expand to include more patients of different ages and with an increasing number of tumour types.

Proton beam therapy is currently available across the UK from three Rutherford Cancer Centres (Newport, Bedlington, and Reading). This means that there are more services available to NHS patients, where the Rutherford Cancer Centre is contracted to provide those services.

The OCSF enables NHS organisations to commission services from the Rutherford Cancer Centres directly, offering an easy solution that avoids lengthy and costly tendering processes, where the Rutherford Cancer Centres is the most appropriate provider of specialist cancer services. It is effective from April 2020 and has an initial duration of two years, and could be extended for a further two years for the NHS to commission services in England and Wales. It is free of charge to use by the NHS. In addition to proton beam therapy, treatments available at the Rutherford Cancer Centres include:

Rutherford Diagnostics is an approved provider in the Mobile and Strategic Clinical Solutions and Associated Goods Framework, managed by NHS Supply Chain. The Framework allows NHS Trusts to directly enter into a contract for Rutherford Diagnostic services, without the need for a lengthy and costly separate OJEU tender process. Under this Framework, Rutherford Diagnostics can provide the following clinical imaging services:

  • MRI
  • CT
  • PET-CT
  • Ultrasound
  • X-Ray
